Cantabria Labs presents its new awareness campaign “Objective Zero Melanoma 2023”, supported by its ambassadors Rafa Nadal and Sara Andrés, and its sports sponsorship with Real Madrid C.F.

In commemoration of World Day Against Melanoma, the Spanish pharmaceutical laboratory Cantabria Labs presents its new campaign Objective Zero Melanoma 2023.  The goal of the initiative is to raise awareness about the importance of healthy sun exposure habits to together zero out the number of new melanoma cases in Spain.

Cantabria Labs’ latest survey of sunscreen use amongst the general population was conducted with the aim of better understanding sun protection habits in order to create effective, incisive awareness and prevention campaigns. While many of the results were very promising, such as the fact that the population using sunscreen year-round has risen by almost 50% in the past five years and that 30% of these people use SPF50+, there is still a lot of work to be done. 7,474* new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in Spain in 2022 and the American Cancer Society calculates that around 97,610 cases will be diagnosed in the US in 2023.

For this reason, Cantabria Labs, with the help of its ambassadors Rafa Nadal and Sara Andrés, and its sports sponsorship with Real Madrid C.F., is presenting its “Objective Zero Melanoma 2023” campaign to remind people about the importance of the three steps to enjoying healthy sun exposure: protect and repair skin, combine oral sun protection with topically applied sunscreen and visit dermatologists every year to have moles checked.

The campaign, with the slogan “Objective Zero Melanoma”, consists of different video communications that can be seen across all Cantabria Labs digital channels and media as of today.

One of the main campaign ads features dermatologist Rosa Taberner, tennis player Rafa Nadal, Real Madrid players Dani Carvajal, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Thibaut Courtois on behalf of the Real Madrid men’s first team, and Paralympic athlete Sara Andrés. The ad draws parallels between checking moles and successful achievements in the world of sports (a tennis ball falling in or out of the court, scoring a goal in football, and validation of the distance of a  long-jump in track and field), serving as a reminder of the importance of completing the three steps, of ticking them off your list, if you want to stay safe in the sun and zero out melanoma.

In the second campaign ad, which features a highly dynamic and innovative format simulating a tennis rally, the dermatologist Yolanda Gilaberte and Rafa Nadal win the match against melanoma by listing the keys to healthy sun habits and the importance of choosing a good sunscreen. Objective Zero Melanoma, achieved!

Cantabria Labs’ “Objective Zero Melanoma 2023” campaign also launches a social media challenge whereby users leverage Instagram to win the match against melanoma, encouraged by the voice of none other than company ambassador Rafa Nadal. The aim of the Instagram challenge is to continue supporting the various projects we partner to increase visibility and awareness of the importance of skin cancer prevention and research. The goal is for the filter to be used more than 7,500 times, symbolizing the number of new melanoma cases diagnosed in Spain in 2022.

Athletes like Crys Dyaz, and numerous organisations and foundations, sign up each year to the tips and recommendations of Cantabria Labs and its Heliocare sun protection range, always with a focus on #whatmatters: health. The Copa del Rey Mapfre sailing regatta,  Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, Rafa Nadal Tour by Santander, What Really Matters Foundation, Madrid Tennis Federation and Clínica Menorca Foundation are just some of the organisations that have joined the cause to help promote these three steps to zero out   melanoma.

Cantabria Labs works hard every year to expand the reach of its awareness campaigns in order to help better look after people’s health and improve their quality of life. With a constant emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship, the company strives to get the messages out into the world and offer society scientifically backed products to meet all needs.

This year Cantabria Labs has also joined the “Todos contra el cáncer” (All Against Cancer) campaign, an Event of Special Public Interest initiated by the Spanish Association Against Cancer to promote research, outreach, prevention and care for cancer patients.

The Spanish pharmaceutical company Cantabria Labs, together with the Real Madrid Football Club, launches its #TrainYourSkin campaign, which aims to raise awareness worldwide about  the importance of caring for skin health.

Cantabria Labs takes care of the skin of the players of Real Madrid, and together  with the men and women’s football teams will take its skin and healthcare message to the world.

“Cantabria Labs’ mission is to improve people’s health and quality of life. The launch of this spot is one more exciting step towards meeting new challenges and continue working  with scientific evidence and healthcare professionals towards this goal. We are happy to be able to do this with  Real Madrid, a club with which we share many values of teamwork and dedication: they represent a unique partner and speaker for such an important message”, says Susana Rodríguez, CEO and General Manager of Cantabria Labs.

The initial launch of this new campaign, “Train Your Skin”, features a number of  different audiovisual elements . The main spot of the campaign can be found as of today on the digital channels of both Cantabria Labs and Real Madrid, as well as on social media. The parallelism between Real Madrid and Cantabria Labs can be found in the concept of “train”, which explains how training can be used to achieve success and healthy skin.

Last July, Cantabria Labs announced its global sponsorship agreement with Real Madrid for an initial period of 3 seasons. Together they will collaborate on awareness campaigns for  health care and the importance of healthy sun exposure, as well as the promotion of the Cantabria Labs brand and the properties of its HELIOCARE (photoprotection) line for the Real Madrid men  and women’s teams, and ENDOCARE (facial care) and ELANCYL (body care) for its women’s team.

The Spanish pharmaceutical laboratory has grown through innovation and unique patented technologies. With the support of healthcare professionals, Cantabria Labs  has set milestones, including for example with the discovery and development of oral sun protection more than 25 years ago, a market in which it is world leader.

Real Madrid is the most valuable football club in the world, with 117 years of history, around 100,000 members and 300 million followers on social networks. Cantabria Labs recognizes itself in the collective greatness that Real Madrid repeatedly achieves through its excellence, hard work and dedication. With this agreement, Cantabria Labs will increase its visibility and brand recognition to further promote dermatological health and thus enable more people to continue celebrating life.

  • It expands its WATERCARE project, a set of initiatives for the care of water, a resource that makes up 70% of the planet and 60% of humans.
  • During an event featuring Cantabria Labs CEO Susana Rodríguez and environmental journalist José Luis Gallego, the Spanish pharmaceutical company unveiled to the media its commitment to people and the planet through its “Celebrate life Manifesto”, which was presented in conjunction with a series of new water care initiatives, WATERCARE.

Celebrate life sums up the goal  of Cantabria Labs, which is to improve the quality and health of people in order to celebrate life. That is why  the manifesto, ” reflects the commitment Cantabria Labs has made  over the past  30 years of its development, the  next steps it will take towards fulfilling its mission, and the  way it will give   back to society what it receives from science,” commented Cantabria Labs’ CEO, Susana Rodríguez.

Celebrate Life Manifesto – LIFE: Past, Present and Future

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are divided into  three main areas: people, environment and economic growth. Cantabria Labs has developed  its manifesto based on the values that it believes t contribute to life: innovation, entrepreneurship and caring, to be close to people in order to take them far.

    Innovation: SDGs 3 and 9

With a passion for innovation, Cantabria Labs seeks to provide solutions to present and future health problems. All its people work towards this common goal in line with  the Sustainable Development Goals: Health and Innovation (SDG 3 and 9), through, for example, the development of ingredients, research  studies and clinical trials, as well as the creation  of the Celebrate innovation Awards and  the signing of cooperation agreements  with MIT.

    Entrepreneurship: SDGs 4, 6, 7 and 12

Cantabria Labs was  pioneered  the discovery of oral photoprotection thanks to its restless nature and  work with Harvard University more than 25 years ago. This non-conformist spirit, together with a commitment to quality education (SDG 4), continuous improvement and the development of different solutions to improve the lives of people and the planet, have contributed to the launch of recent projects such as the eco-sustainable innovation and production centre in La Concha,  Cantabria (SDG 6, 7 and 12) with the Water Laboratory,   the on-going scholarship project in Africa, and training in universal human values with the  What Really Matters Foundation (SDG 4).

    Caring: SDGs 1, 2, 8 and 10

Without fighting to eradicate poverty and hunger, people’s development and economic growth is not possible. Together with the Emalaikat Foundation and Caritas, Cantabria Labs supports social solidarity and protection programmes to help those  most vulnerable. By reducing their exposure and vulnerability to climate events and other economic, social and environmental disasters, Cantabria Labs has shown  its commitment for more than 25 years to 783 million people living below the international poverty line. Reducing inequalities and promoting  economic growth and decent work are thus the second step in its  work and commitment in this area, for example, in collaboration with the AMPROS Association and ASTOR INLADE, or  recently,  the Querer Foundation. The positive net employment experienced by Cantabria Labs over the past year and the creation of more than 150 jobs with the opening  the new facility in Cantabria, are a tangible sign of its dedication to creating and ensuring  dignified,  stable employment. Closeness   to  people characterises its  management model to ensure  a sustainable project over time.

WATERCARE: programme for the care of the natural resource water.

70% of the planet Earth is made of water, and 60% of our bodies. For the past 25 years, Cantabria Labs has actively contributed to bringing clean water and sanitation to more than 41,400 people in Africa through the Emalaikat Foundation, and recently, its activities have  focused even more on this resource as part of the global  WATERCARE programme.

In 2019, Cantabria Labs  opened its R&D and eco-sustainable production centre in Cantabria, located on a territory with  a unique mineral-medicinal spring which previously had been emptied and dispersed  into a nearby e river. Today, the Water Laboratory makes it possible to use reneable and CO2-emission-free energy to  heat its facilities.. The natural temperature of the  water is  39ºC and thus it represents an important geothermal resource, The daily flow is the  equivalent to  an olympic-sized  swimming pool  which makes it possible to have sufficient quantities  to irrigate the land and,  once purified, be used as an ingredient in for topical product formulations.

Clean water and sanitation (SDG6), together with  affordable and non-polluting energy (SDG7), are part of Cantabria Labs’ current challenges as part of  WATERCARE. The programme focusses on  its commitment to water care from three angles: as the main need of human beings, as a resource that must be managed in a sustainable way, and as a means and help for environmental conservation.

To this end, Cantabria Labs has signed an agreement with Gravity Wave, whose mission is to transform 100% of the plastic waste collected from the Mediterranean and Cantabrian seas into recycled products and materials to create unique products in an exemplary  circular economy model. In the same way, the Spanish pharmaceutical company will be moving to work to  care for the  estuaries and rivers of  the local Cantabrian ecosystem, as well as with the Tagus Hydrographic Confederation. It has also signed important agreements with various organisations to promote biodiversity.

With respect to the valuable resource of water,  naturalist and journalist  José Luis Gallego commented,  “we use water to quench our thirst,  grow food and  maintain our hygiene. We also use it to make energy,  it is a means of transport,  and we turn it into an economic resource to generate value and wealth. But beyond any other quality or its value as a resource, water is the lifeblood of nature: it is the essential element for life on our planet and, as such, we must respect, care for and protect it.”

With a focus on future generations, Cantabria Labs thus presented its commitment and management model to give back to society and the planet what  it receives from science. It also took advantage of the event  to announce the company’s 2021  annual results:  a consolidated net balance of 242 million euros, 23% growth compared to the previous year and an optimistic forecast for closing in 2023 with  around 18% growth.

After 25 years of working to care for this essential natural resource in Turkana (Kenya) in collaboration with the Emalaikat Foundation, the pharmaceutical firm has expanded its commitment in recent years with new initiatives

Madrid, 8 June 2022 – “70% of planet Earth is made up of water, as is 60% of people” is what Susana Rodríguez, CEO of Cantabria Labs, stated at the presentation for the WATERCARE program, attended by naturalist José Luis Gallego, expert in sustainability and the environment. The WATERCARE project encompasses all the company’s actions related to caring for water, those classified within the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the company’s next steps towards protecting this valuable natural resource.

Over the course of the Spanish pharmaceutical firm’s 30+ years in the sector, Cantabria Labs has collaborated with the Emalaikat Foundation to build and maintain 188 dams and 147 wells, contributing to bringing clean water to over 41,400 people across diverse parts of Kenya.  It has also participated in a project to channel water from Nariokotome to a preschool centre in the Kaito region, some 6 km away, thereby provide direct access to drinking water for 100 children there.

In 2019, Cantabria Labs inaugurated the La Concha R&D and eco-sustainable production centre with a mineral-medicinal hot spring from which 39 ºC water flows and whose geothermal properties are used to sustainably heat the plant facilities without any CO2 emissions. Taking advantage of this natural resource is possible thanks to the Water Laboratory, which captures the spring water and uses it for various purposes, including watering green areas, for drinking water, or as an ingredient in the production of topical products.

When asked about the importance of caring for water and responsible management of its use, naturalist José Luis Gallego stated that “Water as a resource is far more scarce than we think because, though it makes up 70% of the planet, only 1% of it is fresh water. And of that 1%, 90% is frozen at the poles, meaning we are left with only 0,25% – and we are polluting it. Therefore, access to clean water and sanitation is the SDG we should focus on if we want to achieve the rest of the 2030 Agenda goals. Because water is the lifeblood of nature and the source of all life”.

WATERCARE with the SDGs and the UN 2030 Agenda

The WATERCARE project encompasses up to 6 Sustainable Development Goals divided among the three primary principles:

    • As a fundamental need for humans

Access to drinking water is a basic necessity for eliminating poverty and caring for peoples’ health. Cantabria Labs contributes to SDGs 1, 3 and 6 thanks to channelling water and building new wells in Turkana.

    • As a resource requiring sustainable management

Spring water is used thanks to the Water Laboratory as the water was being wasted and diverted into the estuary. Now it is used to heat the plant facilities with renewable energy.

    • As a means and support for environmental preservation

     https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/09/S-WEB-Goal-14.png

One of the most recent measures taken includes the agreements signed with Gravity Wave or the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation, by which Cantabria Labs helps clean up rivers and oceans to help preserve ecosystems and foster biodiversity.

    Next steps

To continue working towards environmental preservation and, more specifically, caring for water, the pharmaceutical firm recently signed an agreement with Gravity Wave, whose mission it is to transform 100% of the plastic waste collected from the Mediterranean and Cantabrian seas into recycled products and materials as a model of a circular economy. Also along these lines, the firm ensures it will invest significant effort into looking after rivers and estuaries to protect and preserve local ecosystems. To do this, it has reached significant agreements with various companies to promote biodiversity.

  • World Melanoma Day, May 23rd.
  • Once again Cantabria Labs raises awareness about “OK” healthy sun exposure with its ambassador, Rafa Nadal.
  • To commemorate World Melanoma Day, Cantabria Labs is launching Zero Melanoma Goal, a new initiative as part of its “Give your all for what’s important, protect yourself from the sun awareness campaign. With the help of its ambassador, athlete Rafa Nadal, the campaign aims to raise awareness regarding looking after what’s important: good health and the prevention of skin disorders.

Despite the fact that 66% of the population already uses sun protection all year long and 83% report using an SPF of 50 or more1, there is still a lot of work to be done in this area. In Spain, more than 6,0002 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year and the incidence today is now twice as high as it was 30 years ago. In addition, melanoma is the form of skin cancer that causes most deaths in dermatological patients.

That is why Cantabria Labs wants to make the public more aware of the importance of good sun exposure habits in preventing these diseases. Together with Rafa Nadal, it’s launching the  Zero Melanoma Goal “ hand challenge on Instagram which, through a “hand challenge”, helps people learn the 3 steps for being “ok” in the sun and thus contribute to reaching the goal of #0melanoma: protect and repair your skin, combine oral and topical sun protection and, finally, check your moles and visit your dermatologist.

    Double solidarity challenge

If the filter #0melanoma with the three steps for healthy sun exposure goes viral on Instagram and obtains more shares than the total number of melanoma cases diagnosed in 2021, Cantabria Labs  will add an extra 3,000 euros to the donation it makes annually to the Healthy Skin Foundation of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The AEDV is a professional association with which Cantabria Labs collaborates for research into, and prevention of, skin diseases.

Cantabria Labs works every year to ensure widespread visibility for its awareness campaigns to promote health and healthy sun exposure. To this end, and to achieve its goal of improving people’s quality of life, it has been working for the past three years with Rafa Nadal.  In 2021 alone with the help of this star tennis player, Cantabria Labs convinced over 120,000 people to learn to check their moles for early detection of skin cancer through the ABCDE method.

Other athletes such as Sara Andrés and Mario Mola, and various organizations and foundations, have all joined Cantabria Labs over the years in supporting and promoting HELIOCARE’s advice and recommendations focusing on #whatsimportant. These entities and initiatives include the Copa del Rey Mapfre regatta, the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, the Rafa Nadal Tour by Vodafone, the Lo que de Verdad Importa Foundation, the Madrid Tennis Federation, and the the Menorca Clinic Foundation, all of which have joined and helped promote the three-step hand gesture and healthy sun exposure campaign to work towards achieving #0melanoma.

    How to join the challenge:

    1. Enter the Cantabria Labs Corporate Profile: @cantabrialabs_com
    2. Once inside the profile, go to the filter category next to Reels & IGTV
    3. Click on “try filter” and choose between languages
    4. Keeping pressing on the button or give it the hands-free function.
    5. Record the Heliocare “Hand challenge” to the rhythm of the music and save it
    6. Choose whether you want to publish it on reels or stories and tag the person you are challenging
    7. Congratulations, you are now part of Rafa’s Goal Zero Melanoma challenge!

It all began when project pioneer Dr Cristina Galván travelled there in 2015 with the hope of achieving better skin health amongst a population continually affected by infectious diseases like scabies, impetigo and leprosy, and advanced skin tumours in vulnerable communities such as albinos. What matters, Dr Galván says, is making them self-sufficient through education. “Teaching the local health personnel who see patients daily the skills they need to diagnose and cure; joint care management with patients, training workshops and the online dermatology network are part of this educational task. For online dermatology we have established an easy-to-complete protocol that involves answering questions and following a number of simple guidelines. After a very short training period the staff can send through each case and clinical photos so we can make a good diagnosis and provide the right care and prevention advice.”

The work has paid off: the online dermatology protocol recently won the Free Communications Award from the Epidemiology and Health Promotion Group of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV). It has also produced good news: after a lot of effort combining his studies with work to support his family and with financial support from Cantabria Labs, one of the local health personnel that had been working with DerMalawi from the outset recently obtained the Clinical Medicine diploma that will allow him to work as a medical assistant, enabling him to improve his work conditions and salary. “I have always focused on empowering the local people,” Dr Galván said. Cantabria Labs has believed in the project from the get-go and supported it economically and with people on the ground. “The company not only helps us with the skin health programme but also by promoting education in schools. Education and culture are the foundation for moving forward,” Dr Galván said.

“More and more people are completing courses promoted by the World Health Organization and other cooperation agencies. They catch the bug for this kind of work when we do it together”. The excellent content allows the health personnel to upskill and feel more confident attending patients. “It isn’t always easy to get them on board since the only benefit for them, as the training courses are not formally recognised, is personal satisfaction rather than a better contract, wage or CV,” Dr Galván said.

Time to hand over the baton
For Dr Galván, who is devoted body and soul to research, private consultation and solidarity skincare, the future medical assistant diploma comes at a bitter-sweet time. ‘Bitter’ because for health reasons she has to hand the DerMalawi baton over to new hands. And ‘sweet’ because, as she says, “it’s like your child who came top of the class now out in the big wide world and working alongside some wonderful people”. Part of the success, she believes, is that DerMalawi “has grown at a sensible pace. It is also because a company like Cantabria Labs values the importance of the educational improvement of the population and of providing help by sending its pharmacists out to train people on the ground so they can make the topical products they need, taking a step further towards self-sufficiency. Its support is absolutely essential,” Dr Galván said.

  • Cantabria Labs is renewing its support and commitment to open innovation by signing a collaboration agreement with IDIVAL to conduct research into natural extracts that protect skin from stress-induced ageing. Scientific evidence confirms the powerful antiageing activity of Cantabria Labs-developed technologies.

The preclinical research project subsidised by the Government of Cantabria as part of the 2021 Knowledge Transfer Promotion and spearheaded by scientist and IDIVAL researcher Dr Alberto Gandarillas is investigating the antiageing activity of Cantabria Labs’ technologies in in vitro human skin-cell models.

The trial is divided into three phases: a preliminary phase studying telomere shortening using confocal microscopy techniques; a second phase analysing markers related to cell senescence and differentiation; and a third phase that examines cell stress response markers and cell cycle, analysing DNA damage and repair activity.

The project is planned to last throughout 2022 but could be extended based on results.

“We expect to have a report by the end of the year that brings together all the study data and will enable us to identify the action mechanism which explain the antiageing activity of the molecules,” said Azahara Rodríguez Luna from the Innovation Scientific Research Department at Cantabria Labs, the project’s head investigator for the company.

Cantabria Labs’ ongoing partnership with the Marquis of Valdecilla Health Research Institute (IDIVAL) has given it access to expert teams in the area of ageing and the possibility of conducting the experiment.

“These types of agreements are an example of how in order to provide benefits to society, there must be knowledge generation, and strong support is needed from both public and private institutions. It’s two-way interaction of interest to both parties,” Dr Gandarillas said.
